Directly from the public registers maintained by the Charity Commission for England and Wales, the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR), and the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland (CCNI). We do not verify it independently — always check details with the charity itself.

The data from the three charity registers is structured differently and may sometimes contain information that is sparse or incorrect. For example, some charities in the Charity Commission for England and Wales data list themselves as working "throughout England and Wales" when, in fact, they only work in a local area. Ideally, this is corrected and re-submitted to the Charity Commission by the charity themselves, but I've also added ranking adjustments that reduce the impact when a charity's name gives away that it really belongs to a different area. A further issue is that the three charity regulators handle "where it works" differently. England & Wales relies on a list of operating areas; Scotland provides a single council area; and the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland (CCNI) does not publish any area-of-operation data at all. I've put in optimisations to help resolve this — for Northern Ireland, where there is no area data, the search falls back to the charity's head-office location. A separate semantic issue is that some charities use non-standard terms to describe what they do for their sub-sector, or in their key data, such as their name or description, which is one reason a charity can appear lower in the results. There is no sponsored ranking feature which skews the results.

We only list individual food banks if they are registered as a charity on one of the charity data sets. A lot of food banks are not listed as independent charities but affiliated to one, such as The Trussell Trust. Go to givefood.org.uk to find local food banks.

Because we don't set any cookies that would need one. A consent banner is only required when a website stores non-essential cookies or tracking on your device before you agree to them — and we don't do that. Our website analytics are cookieless (nothing is stored on your device to measure visits), we use no advertising or cross-site tracking cookies, and the map on a charity page with a custom layout loads only if you click “Show map” — nothing from Google is set until then.
