Our primary purpose is informing and educating about the history of South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle, the life and work of Nelson Mandela and Scotland’s connections with this, and lessons to be drawn for major present-day problems everywhere. Our education pack is online and being used by schools, and other online material is in preparation for linking to our planned statue of Nelson Mandela in Glasgow. We also distribute information through social media and at events. We see the statue as serving as a permanent constant reminder, visual aid and focus for educational work for present and future generations, with links directly from the statue site to online material. We hope it will prompt and enable both local people and visitors to learn more about all the matters mentioned. As at September 2025 five shortlisted sculptors are preparing designs and maquettes to be judged in November. Completion is due by August 2026, and the final unveiling in October that year.
