About

IEHT was set up to own and manage the Isle of Eigg for the benefit of its residents and to conserve the natural heritage. Houses and farms are leased for long term rent and land has been made available for shared ownership housing to provide more security for residents. Eigg wasn’t connected to the mainland electricity grid so we have installed an island wide, renewable energy system which was a first to combine wind, solar & hydro technologies. This has improved the quality of life here considerably. Various infrastructure projects have provided opportunity for residents to run existing businesses (e.g. Shop & Tearoom) and to start new ones in new well-appointed premises. Management of woodland has included felling areas of Sitka spruce plantation which is processed and sold as firewood. Areas have been re-planted with more suitable native trees and a tree nursery has been created to provide stock from local provenance.
