The Scottish Tartans Authority studies, records and stimulates research and education about Scottish Tartans, assists in the maintenance of The Scottish Register of Tartans and maintains an additional and extensive archive of tartans and woven samples. The Scottish Tartans Authority assists in the accreditation of new and original tartans and, by encouraging high standards in the manufacture and marketing of tartan cloth and Highland Dress, enhances the reputation and knowledge of Scottish Tartans both in Scotland and worldwide.
