About

Mallaig Heritage Centre is a museum for Mallaig and the surrounding West Lochaber area. Our mission is to celebrate the unique heritage of this area, its people, and their way of life, ensuring that both our local community and visitors can connect with the area’s past. We achieve this by curating permanent and temporary exhibitions that showcase artefacts, photographs, and stories from Mallaig’s maritime, railway, and social history. Our displays highlight the transformation of Mallaig to a thriving fishing port, the impact of the West Highland Railway, and the lives of those who built and sustained the community. The Heritage Centre offers displays, films, talks for schools, volunteer opportunities and outreach to encourage learning and discovery. We involve our local community and visitors alike, fostering a deeper appreciation of our heritage. Through research, conservation, and collaboration, we work to preserve the spirit of Mallaig’s history for future generations.
