The University operates as a small specialist University providing education and learning in agriculture, land management and other subjects. It remained in the private sector from inception in 1845 as the Royal Agricultural College until 2001, when it became publicly funded through the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). It attained University status in April 2013.
